Cameron’s writing career is if not a good one at least an interesting one, wildly oscillating between bursts of creative expression and by the numbers corporate slop she seems to be without a real voice and purpose. While it would be wildly entertaining to lambast her early works, I dont feel like that best represents her as an artist, its her post internet output that really fascinates me. Clawing her way out of the pandemic when she did finally start writing (insert the writing about the post pandemic) she started by ripping off the worst mid 2000s music reviews the internet had to offer. Its an impassioned start to be kind. (and I am choosing to be kind here)
Her more corporate writings from around this time are bland and forgettable, knowing what I do about her writing process I can only assume they were done at the very last moment through a RedBull and tears. Its when she got to college that Cameron's writing started to take the shape we know today. Cast aside in a long forgotten word document sits what is retroactively a rebirth for the young woman. Coming hot off the heels of a name change Cameron jumped headfirst in the realm of “adult writing.” In many ways it is what you want from a young upstart: energetic, bursting with passion, and almost entirely unreadable. Sorry to bury the lead but it is undoubtedly a mess. Very evidently written after her first exposure to Hunter S. Thompson she cant seem to string a sentence together without veering into left field with a finger extended to any semblance of readership, to quote a Dr. Klemp
That said, I think sometimes you’ve traded a significant point for a pleasing turn of phrase that suggests the significant point. There’s a benefit to not always being direct, of course, but metaphors have to be mixed with concrete language to make sure that the reader (and you) knows exactly what you are saying.
Her later output avoids these pitfalls for the most part (this trainwreck however shows she is still very capable of releasing a dud) but at the same time she follows in the footsteps of her landfill indie forebears and sheds a lot of that raw energy that made her so exciting. Her late period career has her once again revolving around the two polarized ends like a magnet with no correct side, but in contrast to her earlier dilemma this recent run feels truly scared. Before her color by numbers style came from a lack of understanding on exactly how to write a paper, but she has demonstrated on a purely technical level she can write a paper, so the question remains: what gives?
